The American Biogas Council has rated California as No. 1 in terms of its biogas potential. With 301 biogas systems installed, the Council sees the potential for up to new 1,294 systems, capable of producing a total of 181.6 billion cubic feet of biogas per year. The capital investment potential is thought to be US$3.9 billion.
Farm-derived manure is expected to have the greatest potential, with capacity for over new 900 systems, compared to the 38 currently in use. These new manure-derived systems could account for over half of all biogas output in the state.
