Development of WtE, MBT, IBA treatment and fuel storage facilities

Earlier this month it was revealed that planning consent for a £240 million project Mallusk, Northern Ireland had been overturned following a judicial review brought by NGO Noarc21. It was determined that permission should not have been granted by a civil servant in the absence of a ministerial appointment.

The project is being carried out by arc21, an umbrella waste management body for 11 councils in the area. The group originally submitted a planning application in March 2014, consisting of a mechanical biological treatment (MBT) plant, a waste-to-energy (WtE) thermal treatment plant and an incinerator bottom ash (IBA) treatment facility, among others.
