Next up in our series for the 2018 Global Waste Investment Fact file is the South Africa edition. As of February 2018, AcuComm was listing 31 projects in the country. These have a total value of US$2,067 million or US$67 million each.
Key points from this Fact File
- Incineration (with energy recovery) is the leading project type, accounting for US$919 million or 44% of the total. This is followed by gasification, accounting for US$360 million or 17% of the total.
- The total estimated capacity for these projects is 4.3 million tonnes. This is equal to 138,492 tonnes per project on average and 30% of South Africa’s estimated annual waste generation at 14.4 million tonnes.
- Waste investments totalling US$1,720 million are expected to become operational over the next few years. This is currently expected to peak in 2021 at US$606 million.
