Construction of new waste processing, recycling & composting facilities
Following a visit from the Minister of Environment and Territorial Planning, it has been revealed that a composting plant located at the Areosa landfill is now operational. The plant is part of a much larger project to expand the facilities at Sociedade Galega do Medio Ambiente’s (SOGAMA) environmental waste complex in Cerceda.
Upgrading of the site will result in capacity increasing from 550,000 to around 1 million tonnes per year, which, in effect, means it will be able to process all the municipal waste produced in Galicia.
Once complete, the complex will be the largest in Europe and one of the largest in the world.
