Serbia: Development of a WtE, landfill and recycling project
As part of Serbia’s EU accession negotiations, waste management practices were set out for the country to meet. As a result, the City of Belgrade is planning to develop greenfield waste treatment and disposal facilities with the hopes that it will remediate the threat posed by the current unsustainable waste disposal practices.

Sakol Energy (SKE) is to invest around THB 789.84 million in a biomass power plant project in Phrae Province. 8 MW of the 9.9 MW the plant will produce will be sold to the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) as they aim to use more renewable energy resources.

Construction of an MSW waste treatment and recycling plant
The Municipality of Querétaro has recently inaugurated a new waste treatment and sorting plant, designed and manufactured by Bianna Recycling.
The facility is claimed to be the largest of its kind in Latin America and uses the latest technology to separate organic, ferrous and recyclable materials. When operations start in May, up to 78% of the areas’ waste will be processed and 300 tonnes of compost will be produced for the government’s green areas.

This brings the total number of active projects in the AcuComm database to 4,899. They have an estimated value of US$353.7 million or US$72 million on average.

Construction of a biomass boiler plant fuelled by poultry manure
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has issued a US$5 million loan to Dniprovska Agri Group (DAG) to go towards the construction of a biomass boiler plant in Nikopol.

Construction of a 300,000 tpa biorefinery
SCA Biorefinery Östrand is planning to build a new biorefinery at its Östrand pulp mill site. Around 300,000 tonnes of biofuels would be produced each year for transportation uses, along with 120,000 tonnes of biocoal to be processed into pellets and 110,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
Following an environmental impact assessment, it is hoped that the permitting process will be initiated. This is expected to happen by the end of the year.

Canada: Construction of an organics biofuel processing facility
The City of Surrey officially opened North America’s first fully integrated closed-loop organic waste management facility earlier this month. Curb side organic kitchen and yard waste will be converted into biofuel using anaerobic digestion technology, to later be used by the local fleet of natural gas-powered waste collection and service vehicles.
