In July 2017, SUEZ announced that it will co-develop a soil processing facility with Ventia at SUEZ’s Taylors Road Landfill in Dandenong South, 45 km from the centre of Melbourne.
In January 2012, SITA Australia (now SUEZ) announced that it had received the necessary permits from the Environmental Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) to develop a soil processing facility to treat and recover contaminated soil at its Taylors Road Landfill in Dandenong South in Victoria. The EPA’s approval followed the announcement in late 2011 by the Minister for Planning, Matthew Guy, that SITA’s planning permit and amendment application to allow the use and development of a soil processing facility at the Taylors Road Landfill had been approved.
The soil processing facility is designed to treat 15,000-20,000 tonnes a year. It will use direct thermal desorption treatment and stabilisation technologies to treat a range of contaminated soil to minimise its environmental impact and where possible create the potential for re-use. Development of the facility provides for the remediation of contaminated soil from development sites across Melbourne to less hazardous products that pose less risk to the environment.
SUEZ State General Manager, Kelvin Sargent commented: “The facility will treat and reduce the environmental risks of contaminated soils and recover valuable materials that can be reused. By co-locating the facility at Taylors Road Landfill, we will provide a complete resource recovery and management solution for contaminated soils in Victoria".
SUEZ expects to put the facility into operation in late 2017.
In August 2014, SITA received approval from EPA Victoria to conduct a unique six-month operational trial at the landfill, with a scheduled start in September. SITA trialled the use of restricted Category C soil as a ‘daily cover’ in a single landfill cell which is specifically designed and managed to receive prescribed industrial waste.
